Burnout is a state that can arise in anyone, often after a period of prolonged and/or intense stress, characterized by some of the following symptoms:

• Exhaustion! Physical, emotional, psychological exhaustion!
• Difficulty concentrating
• Memory difficulties
• Poor decision making capacity
• Lack of enjoyment, even of activities one has historically enjoyed
• Social isolation, pulling away from others
• Frequent negative emotions (e.g. sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety) and/or feeling emotionally numb
• More frequent illness
• Unexplained physical sensations such as dizziness, nausea, racing heart, aches and pains
• Loss of appetite and/or seeking “comfort foods”
• Avoiding self care such as exercise and hygiene
• Lack of motivation
• Easily distracted
• Repetitive and maybe intrusive thoughts (rumination)
• More conflict
• Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and/or emptiness
• Cynicism
• Apathy
• Loss of connection to personal values/ideals
• Failing to enforce boundaries (e.g. saying yes to everyone) or overly rigid boundaries (e.g. trusting few, if any, people)

Burnt out employees can result in negative outcomes for organizations, such as low employee engagement and retention, reduced productivity, and potentially lower profits.

Fortunately, learning resiliency skills can drastically reduce the risk of burnout and lead to employees that are motivated, positive, and productive. To learn more about the resiliency training I provide, click here.
